Behind the Scenes of Your Medications: Roxboro’s Integrated Pharmacy Partnership with Meadows Mile

“Most people think of a pharmacy as the place a prescription ends up. We think of it as the place a treatment plan meets real life. A prescription is a decision made in an exam room; everything that follows — whether it gets taken, whether it works, whether it quietly clashes with something else in the cabinet, whether it still makes sense six months from now — happens at home, between visits. That’s the gap a pharmacist is trained to close. Dispensing is the part you see. The real work is the judgment behind it: asking the right questions, catching what doesn’t add up, and making sure every medication someone takes is still earning its place.”

— Michael Kani, PharmD, Meadows Mile Pharmacy

Why Integrated Pharmacy Care Matters

At Roxboro, medication is never treated as an afterthought — it’s part of the same long-term, coordinated care plan that shapes every other aspect of a member’s care. For members managing chronic conditions, or simply a new prescription after a visit, that means renewals, monitoring, and follow-up happen as a continuation of your care plan, not as a separate errand you have to manage on your own. This is why Roxboro partners with Meadows Mile Pharmacy. The partnership gives members direct access to pharmacists who can support medication reviews, answer medication-related questions, and work alongside the Roxboro clinical team when treatment changes or concerns arise.

How the Meadows Mile Partnership Works

For many Roxboro members, the relationship with Meadows Mile begins with a medication review. This is particularly helpful for new members who are already taking medications, or when a new medication is being introduced. The pharmacist can review the member’s medication regimen, answer questions, identify potential concerns, and help ensure they understand how to use their medications effectively.

The pharmacy also serves as an accessible point of contact as treatment continues. Members can speak with the pharmacist about medication-related questions, side effects, or concerns, with the pharmacy and Roxboro clinical team communicating directly when physician input is needed.

Meadows Mile also provides prescription dispensing and home delivery across Calgary, helping make the practical side of medication management easier for members.

Key Benefits for Members

The partnership is built around three things Roxboro members consistently say they value most.

  • Safety: Medication reviews give members an opportunity to discuss their full medication regimen with a pharmacist, including potential interactions, side effects, timing, and other concerns.

  • Access: For many medication-related questions or concerns, the pharmacist can be a first point of contact, involving the Roxboro clinical team when additional assessment or a change in treatment is needed.

  • Convenience: Prescriptions can be coordinated directly with Meadows Mile, with home delivery available across Calgary.

Q&A: Meet the Pharmacist

We spoke with Michael Kani, lead pharmacist with Meadows Mile Pharmacy, to learn more about how this partnership supports Roxboro members.

How does Meadows Mile collaborate with Roxboro’s clinicians day to day?

Michael: “We work as an extension of the Roxboro care team, not a separate step after your appointment. If a provider has a question about an interaction or wants a second set of eyes on a complex regimen, we’re able to review it directly and get that information back quickly — often before it ever becomes something a member needs to worry about.”

What is a medication review?

Michael: “A medication review gives us an opportunity to sit down with a member and look at everything they’re taking together. We can talk through what each medication is for, how they’re taking it, potential interactions or side effects, and any questions or concerns they have. It also gives us a chance to identify anything that may be worth discussing with their Roxboro provider.”

How do you approach safety for members with more complex medication regimens?

Michael: “Complex regimens are exactly where a pharmacist can add the most value. When someone is managing several medications together, say for a chronic condition, we look at the full picture: interactions, timing, and whether the regimen is still the right fit as things change. That kind of ongoing review is much harder to do in a single appointment, so we help carry that continuity between visits.”

What does home delivery actually look like from your side?

Michael: “Once we receive a prescription from Roxboro, we prepare it and reach out if we need anything from the member — otherwise, it’s delivered right to their door, anywhere in Calgary. For members with recurring prescriptions, we try to make renewals as close to invisible as possible, so medication management is one less thing to think about.”

Are there services members might not realize are available through this partnership?

Michael: “Absolutely. Medication dispensing is only one part of what we do. We can provide additional support for patients working on weight management, including those using GLP-1 medications, as well as structured support for smoking cessation. We also participate in the Iron Network and can support Roxboro patients who are referred to us for iron-related care. We also prepare compounded medications, coordinate specialty medications and biologics (including the special-authorization paperwork that often slows them down), and can arrange compliance packaging for members who find it easier to have their medications organized by dose. And because we hold additional prescribing authority, we can often renew or adapt a prescription ourselves when that’s the quickest way to keep someone’s treatment on track. We offer travel health consultations and vaccinations as well, so there are quite a few situations where the pharmacy can complement the care someone is receiving through Roxboro.”

What’s your best tip for members to get the most out of this partnership?

Michael: “Talk to us before you travel, before you start something new, or if anything about your regimen changes, even something that feels minor. The earlier we know, the more we can help proactively rather than reactively. We’d rather catch a question early than have someone wonder about it on their own.”

What do you enjoy most about working closely with a clinic like Roxboro?

Michael: “Getting to know members over time. Because we’re integrated with their care team, we’re not just filling a prescription once and moving on — we get to know their medications and goals over time, and that context changes how we’re able to support them.”
